Motorway is reinventing how cars are bought and sold online. Our mission is to bring the car industry into the 21st century through ground-breaking products and best in class technology.

In July we launched the UK’s first comparison website for selling your car. With a few taps, customers can compare instant offers for their car, select the best deal and sell in 24 hours. We have helped thousands of people value and sell their car already, and this is just the beginning.

We are a small team of experienced entrepreneurs and engineers who are passionate about creating amazing user experiences and profitable, high-scale businesses. Join us and be part of something big.

We are now seeking our fifth team member to join and take platform development to the next level.

What you’ll be doing

Working alongside a technical founder and full stack developer, you’ll be responsible for platform development at a high-growth startup. The role encompasses:

  • Architecting and developing software for the Motorway platform and API, launching new features and optimising performance
  • Working with third party APIs and webservices (REST, SOAP etc) to provide real-time valuations and submit vehicle and customer information to car buyers
  • Developing our data layer (currently PostgreSQL), architecting our database schema, and creating tools and reports to help us understand our performance
  • Developing and maintaining our infrastructure to scale as we grow, and provide the highest possible performance
  • Working with the founders on the technical and product strategy of the business
  • Championing and implementing software development best practices to ensure our code is high quality, well-tested, scalable and secure
  • Growing the development team, by helping with recruiting, onboarding and mentoring team members

What we’re looking for

If the idea of running technology for a high-scale website with a small team frightens you, stop reading now. We’re looking for someone who’s excited about taking ownership of backend technology and getting stuck in across the whole stack.

Personality, attitude and experience is much more important to us than knowledge of specific technologies. However the following is beneficial:

  • A degree level education in Computer Science, or a maths, science or engineering subject
  • Experience working with web apps, websites and APIs in a production environment
  • Experience developing in JavaScript (especially node.js, npm, Express & Sequelize) or Python
  • Experience configuring and maintaining SQL-based databases, especially PostgreSQL
  • Experience configuring and deploying apps and websites on PaaS services such as Heroku or AWS
  • Experience working with version control, especially Git and GitHub
  • Experience of agile software development practices and working collaboratively in a team environment
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • A passion for technology and software, demonstrated by a personal project
  • An interest in cars or experience working in the automotive industry

What we offer

Join our team and you will:

  • Have a competitive salary and equity package
  • Be part of a rapidly growing startup at the early stage
  • Have the opportunity for fast career progression
  • Work on products and technology solutions that will change an industry
  • Be able to take responsibility for your own development and working style
