Farmdrop is growing quickly. We’re looking for a talented, experienced, sensible and creative Android Engineer to help lead the business forward. After tremendous success on the iOS platform, we’re now very excited to be building out our first ever Android offering and we’re putting together a team of likeminded problem solving developers to take autonomy and shape our apps from the ground up.
Farmdrop represents a new approach to food retailing whereby the benefits of cutting out the middlemen are shared between customers who enjoy fresher, healthier food at lower prices, and smaller scale producers who enjoy best-ever trading terms. Our mission is to Fix The Food Chain. We already deliver food around London using our own fleet of electric vans and are scaling further afield in 2017. Our supporters include London foodies Gizzi Erskine and Tommi Miers, we work closely with the Soil Association and have been backed by the entrepreneurs behind Asos, Love Film, Zoopla, and Street Car. As of February 2016 we received a £3M investment from Atomico. Farmdrop founder Ben Pugh has been shortlisted for the Bloomberg 2016 Innovation award for changing the environment.
Our tech team
We’re “agile with a small a” – we do daily standups, we have a scrum board, we pair when it makes sense. We are practical and pragmatic in all the things. We “do the right thing” (TDD, constant refactoring, pairing, pull requests and so on) but also recognise that the best software is deployed, working software.
Our tech stack is varied, and we use the best tools for the job at hand. We’d now like to introduce:
- Android SDK
- React Native
to our current Tech Stack of:
- Ruby on Rails
- React & Redux
- Objective C & Swift
- Postgres, Redis, ElasticSearch, Memcached
- Docker, Heroku, AWS
- …and more
You are an experienced engineer with proven Android expertise and a keen interest in utilising React Native across our greenfield app builds.
You will have a lot of autonomy, creativity and impact, getting involved at all levels of the product lifecycle. We’re constantly evolving our product and our tech stack, hence our excitement to get stuck in to React Native. You are a central part of moving our software stack forward, working in a team of capable engineers who love building great software. If we can promise anything, it’s that you’ll learn a lot and have the space to apply the excellent experience you bring with you!
What products will I work on?
- Logistics, driver and route-planning apps and tools
- Customer-facing e-commerce mobile app
- Farmer/producer mobile app
- Hub Automation mobile apps
We’d love you to have:
Experience developing, maintaining and releasing native Android apps
Experience working with React Native and/or React on any platform a distinct advantage
Working knowledge of Android interface guidelines / best practices
Desire to write clean, modular and testable code with consistent code style
Other qualities we prize are:
- A willingness to take responsibility (currently everyone deploys to production, everyone fixes bugs).
- An ability to think creatively.
- An ability to teach, and learn from, others and to work collaboratively.
- An ability to provide leadership and mentoring where required.
- A track record of efficiency and self-discipline.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience working in a startup would definitely be a big plus.
- An appreciation and enthusiasm for Farmdrop’s vision of making the world a slightly better place.
- You love food!
We pay a competitive salary, commensurate with experience. It’s not what you’d get working for a bank, but on the plus side… you won’t be working for a bank 🙂
You also get options, plus lots of nice food. We have a kitchen and a nice big table we all fit around for free daily team lunches using Farmdrop food cooked by our chef.
On top of this we love hanging out with each other and always have cool and unique socials, the last one involved making our very own vodka! Our annual Farm Camp is a big success too, 24 hours of eating, drinking and generally having lots of fun with each other, all in one of our own farmers marquees in the countryside.
