The Head of Data Engineering provides both vision and thought leadership to the way that our product teams, analysts and data scientists effectively use data. As a member of the engineering management team they have direct line management responsibility for all data engineers as well as providing functional leadership to our Data Platform team on a day to day basis. They have overall responsibility for ensuring that we can build and support a data platform which provides a simple and effective way for our teams to work with data whilst ensuring good governance.

They report directly to the VP of Engineering and work very closely with the rest of the engineering management team, product managers, data strategist and data scientists.

The Role

You will be passionate about how you can lead Beamly in being effective with data by making sure that our teams, data scientists and engineers have the right tools available to them and are not blocked in delivering value due to the technology, documentation or tools we provide. This is not a role in which you are expected to be hands-on all the time, but you certainly will want to maintain a level of technical involvement. You’ll gain professional satisfaction in growing the experience and career of those you manage.

  • Play a leading role in defining our data strategy and roadmap with a focus on reuse, best practice, governance and good documentation
  • Provide technical direction and leadership within the Data Platform team to maximise the effectiveness of people working with data
  • Constantly evaluate tools and techniques for their suitability in solving data challenges. Perform product evaluations and make recommendations
  • Manage third party vendor relationships
  • Play a central part in the management team to continually improve and evolve how we deliver value with technology
  • Provide line management and career growth for all data engineers
  • Manage hiring of new data engineers into the organisation

What you will bring to the role

  • You will have excellent knowledge of data platforms and technologies and possess direct experience with some of the data technologies we use.
  • You will have direct previous experience of working with the ingest, processing and storage of data, ideally in a cloud-based context
  • You can show understanding of the problems data technologies must solve for an analyst, data scientist or data engineer.
  • You will have experience in leading, managing and growing software engineers as well as leading engineering and/or cross-functional teams
  • You will have demonstrated experience of building software for the cloud, and believe in a DevOps culture
  • You will have a high level of emotional intelligence.
  • You will have strong written and verbal communication skills with proven experience dealing with different levels of an organisation from Executive level down.
  • You will be knowledgable on a number of flavours of agile/lean methods and able to show where you have used them.

Candidates with direct experience in building data solutions in digital marketing/ad-tech, especially involving recommendation engines and machine-learning approaches will be particularly suitable.
