Who we are

Beamly is a digital marketing and technology agency based in London, UK and New York, United States. We are wholly owned by Coty (an S&P 500 company), but maintain an independent working environment and culture.

Overview

The VP of Engineering provides both vision and leadership to the Beamly Engineering Organisation. They lead by example and work tirelessly to remove impediments and empower their teams to succeed.

They report directly to the Chief Technology Officer and work very closely with the Chief Product Officer.  They are a member of the company management team and play a key role in upholding the company principles and translating the strategic vision of the executive into executable goals.

They have four direct management level reports and oversee a growing organisation of 40+ Engineers and technical staff.

The Role

The VP of Engineering is a challenging and defining role. They believe in diversity of thought and opinion but are able to balance that with the need to deliver. They encourage a learning organisation with an attitude of Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose.

The role includes:

  • Representing engineering in senior leadership meetings and contributing to company strategy discussions and outcomes.
  • Managing our ability to deliver short-term wins with the desire to build long term value.
  • Providing overall management of hiring into the engineering organisation including negotiation with recruitment partners, removing bias and improving diversity and inclusivity.
  • When necessary finding, negotiating and implementing relationships with remote or offshore engineering resources or partners.
  • Handling relationships with key vendors including running selection processes, building business cases and contract negotiation.
  • Being a key technical consultant on client proposals and ensure we enter into agreements that are technically feasible, desirable, staffed and are set up for success.
  • Working with your engineering management team to continually improve our engineering job ladder, handle pay review and promotions and, when required, conduct performance management
  • Keeping abreast of new technologies, tooling, processes and practices in order to continually improve how we develop and deliver software.
  • When things go wrong be the person ultimately responsible, promote a just culture and strive to find and eliminate systemic issues

What you will bring to the role

  • You will have experience in leading and growing an Engineering team.
  • You will come from a technical background, able to understand, evaluate and communicate complex systems and technical problems to varying levels within the organisation.
  • You will ideally will come from a distributed systems environment using event-driven architectures built in a cloud-based infrastructure.
  • You will have a diverse interest in engineering topics from full-stack web development to data-science and machine learning.
  • You will have a high level of emotional intelligence.
  • You will have strong written and verbal communication skills with proven experience dealing with different levels of an organisation from Executive level down.
  • You will have experience in leading managers as well as leading engineering and/or cross-functional teams.
  • You will have experience in all aspects of people management from hiring through to performance management and structural evolution.
  • You will have demonstrable experience in bringing a considered approach to Build vs Buy decisions within an organisation.
  • You will ideally have experience working with outsourced functions or strategic partner organisations and able to develop strong productive relationships.
  • You will be knowledgable on a number of flavours of agile/lean methods and able to show where you have used them.
  • You will understand the economics of software development and are able to manage a technology budget.
  • You will apply a data-driven mindset and are able to define key metrics to measure the effectiveness of your organisation.
